WASHINGTON – Peanut Corp., the Georgia Peanut plant that recently recalled more than 400 of its products, has expanded the recall to include all products that have been produced at the plant since January 1, 2007.
About 500 people have been sick and about eight died from the salmonella outbreak that sparked the recall. Federal inspectors investigating the plant have found roaches, mold, leaky roofs and several other problems leading to the recall expansion.
Though major peanut butter brands have not been affected, the plant produces peanut paste – an ingredient in hundreds of food products including dog biscuits, ice cream and Asian-style sauces. These products are in addition to the already recalled peanut butter, peanut meal, dry and oil roasted peanuts and granulated products produced by the plant.
Even more disturbing is that managers at the Georgia plant, owned by Peanut Corp. of America, continued shipping the salmonella-ridden products.
Though a criminal investigation has been requested, the Food and Drug Administration maintains that this step is premature given the investigation is still underway. However, the plant has since been closed.
